ARCADIS-Prize Prize for geo- and environmental Research

The company ARCADIS Germany GmbH donates an annual prize of 1,000 euros in the field of geo and environmental research. The work eligible for the prize is aimed at the protection and sustainable use of the georesources soil and groundwater or makes other relevant and innovative contributions to improving the quality of life in a perfect balance between built and natural environment. The prize is awarded to outstanding master's and doctoral theses that have been completed at KIT institutes with a focus on geo and environmental sciences. |

Application procedure/criteriaThe call is open to graduates who have completed their Master's or doctoral thesis in the above-mentioned fields in the last two calendar years. The thesis must be reviewed and evaluated.

Required DocumentsCandidates for the award can apply in writing to the Dean of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences. At the time of application, the degree certificate must be available. The following documents must be submitted in electronic form (PDF):

Selection procedureThe prize winners are selected by a jury of experts. The jury will issue an annual call for entries in order to select the prize winner(s). The jury may distribute the prize to more than one candidate if several equally excellent works have been submitted. |

The award ceremony will be held by a representative of ARCADIS during the presentation of the certificate of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences.

Kriterien
Prämiert werden herausragende Masterarbeiten und Doktorarbeiten, die an KIT-Instituten mit geo- und umweltwissenschaftlichem Schwerpunkt angefertigt wurden. Die für den Preis in Frage kommenden Arbeiten zielen auf den Schutz und einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit den Georessourcen Boden und Grundwasser ab oder leisten sonstige relevante und innovative Beiträge zur Verbesserung der Lebensqualität in perfekter Balance zwischen bebauter und natürlicher Umwelt.
An der Ausschreibung können sich Absolventinnen und Absolventen beteiligen, die in den letzten beiden Kalenderjahren ihre Master- oder Doktorarbeit in den genannten Schwerpunkten fertiggestellt haben. Die Arbeit muss begutachtet und bewertet sein.
Erforderliche Unterlagen
Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten für den Preis können sich schriftlich beim Dekanat für Bauingenieur-, Geo- und Umweltwissenschaften bewerben. Zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung muss das Abschlusszeugnis vorliegen. Einzureichen sind folgende Unterlagen in elektronischer Form (PDF):
- ein kurzes Bewerbungsschreiben des Bewerbers / der Bewerberin
- der Lebenslauf des Bewerbers / der Bewerberin
- Kopie des Abschlusszeugnisses des Bewerbers / der Bewerberin
- ein Empfehlungsschreiben des Betreuers / der Betreuerin der Arbeit
- ein Exemplar der Arbeit (elektronisch)

Auswahlverfahren
Die Preisträgerin bzw. der Preisträger wird durch eine Fachjury ausgewählt. Diese nimmt jährlich eine Ausschreibung vor, um die Preisträgerin bzw. den Preisträger zu ermitteln. Die Jury kann den Preis auf mehrere Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten verteilen, wenn gleichwertige exzellente Arbeiten eingereicht worden sind.
Preisvergabe
Die Preisvergabe findet durch einen Vertreter der ARCADIS Germany GmbH im Rahmen der Urkundenübergabe der Fakultät für Bauingenieur-, Geo- und Umweltwissenschaften statt. Aufgrund der Pandemielage kann aktuell keine persönliche Vergabe stattfinden.

Mit dem ARCADIS-Preis 2021 würdigte die Fachjury die Arbeiten von Elena Kubiak, M.Sc. und Dr. Tanja Portele.
Titel der Arbeiten:
- Tanja Portele: "Seasonal Predictions: From Global to Regional Information for Decision Support in Water Resources Management in Semiarid Regions" (Dissertation)
- Elena Kubiak: "Umweltauswirkungen des historischen Quecksilberbergbaus am Stahlberg (Rheinland-Pfalz)" (Masterarbeit)

Mit dem diesjährigen ARCADIS-Preis 2020 würdigte die Fachjury die herausragende Dissertation zum Thema: „New insights into hydraulic processes and water quality dynamics of alpine karst systems“ , verfasst von Preisträger Herrn Dr. Simon Frank, Institut für Angewandte Geowissenschaften (AGW) des KIT.
Eine persönliche Preisverleihung ist im Rahmen einer Fakultätsfeier in kleinerem Rahmen für November 2021 geplant.

Der diesjährige ARCADIS-Preis 2019 geht an gleich zwei Preisträgerinnen. Die Fachjury an der KIT-Fakultät für Bauingenieur-, Geo- und Umweltwissenschaften sprach sich in diesem Jahr für die Aufteilung des Preises auf. Frau Marion Heublein wird für ihre herausragende Dissertation zum Thema „GNSS and InSAR based water vapor tomogra-phy: A Compressive Sensing solution“ ausgezeichnet. Frau Selina Schwarz erhält den Preis für ihre herausragende Masterarbeit zum Thema „Explaining declining and increasing vegetation trends across the complete Tibetan Plateau by applying a spatially adaptive approach“.
Eine persönliche Preisverleihung war aus gegebenem Anlass in diesem Jahr leider nicht möglich und so erhielten die beiden Preisträgerinnen ihre nicht minder herzlichen Glückwünsche auf dem Postweg. Die Verleihung wird nachgeholt, sobald möglich.

During this year's day of the KIT Faculty of Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences on July 12, 2019, the Arcadis Prize 2018 was awarded. Mr. Dietmar Reiersrloh, managing director of the ARCADIS Germany GmbH Karlsruhe branch, presented the certificate to the laureate Dr. Teja Kattenborn for his outstanding doctoral thesis on "Linking Canopy Reflectance and Plant Functioning through Radiative Transfer Models".

Also this year, the ARCADIS Award 2017 could be awarded on the occasion of the KIT Faculty Day for Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences. Mr. Dietmar Reiersrloh, Managing Director of the Arcadis branch office in Karlsruhe, congratulated the prize winners Dr. Anna Ender and Anna Kühlen on their award.
The expert jury thus honoured Dr. Anna Ender's outstanding dissertation on the topic "Evaluation of highly variable water quality as basis for a sustainable water supply in the Dong Van karst region, Northern Vietnam", which she completed at the Institute for Applied Geosciences. According to the committee, Ms Enders thus laid the geoscientific and environmental scientific foundations for improving the drinking water supply in a remote mountainous region of Vietnam.
Ms Anna Kühlen received the ARCADIS prize for her equally outstanding work on the topic of "Techno-Economic and Environmentally Conscious Deconstruction Project Planning and Decision Support (TEE-D-Plan)", prepared at the Institute of Industrial Management and Industrial Production (IIP), German-French Institute for Environmental Research (DFIU).
The prize is endowed with a total of 1,000 EUR.

On July 5, 2017, the Arcadis Prize 2016 was awarded during the KIT Faculty Day for Civil Engineering, Geo- and Environmental Sciences. Mr. Dietmar Reiersrloh, Managing Director of the Arcadis branch office in Karlsruhe, presented the certificate to the prize winner Mr. Markus Merk for his outstanding master's thesis on the topic "Quantifizierung der Asutauschdynamik zwischen Grund- und Oberflächenwasser im Anschluss an eine Deichrückverlegung". The prize winner Dr. Helena Banning, who received the award in her absence, received the prize for her outstanding doctoral thesis on "Selenium Isotope Studies in Plants - Development and Validation of a Novel geochemical Tool and its Application to Organic Samples".
